THE MIRACLE SUPPLEMNT: METHYLSULFONYLMETHANE (MSM)

Methylsulfonylmethane, commonly called MSM is an organic Sulfur compound found in green plants, animals, and humans. It can also be made in a laboratory. Biologically active sulfur is one of the most critical nutrients for our bodies to remain youthful and energetic.  As we age, along with a diet deficient in essential nutrients, our bodies become stiff, our cells become rigid, and our overall energy begins to rapidly decelerate. Sulfur is present in many natural unprocessed foods, but it’s quickly lost during the cooking process.
How does MSM work? MSM supplements supply the body with extra sulfur for creating methionine, which helps in important bodily processes like making other chemicals, forming connective tissue, synthesizing/metabolizing foods and absorbing nutrients to be used for energy.
MSM is gaining a lot of attention due to the recent focus on longevity and anti-aging technologies.  Here’s a list of the impressive benefits that MSM delivers:
1.      It is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent due to its ability to allow metabolic wastes to be removed from the cells. It is because Sulfur needs to be present in order for these toxins and wastes to be removed. Excess weight on the body is inflammation. MSM supplements are also beneficial for helping the body form new joint and muscle tissue while lowering inflammatory responses that contribute to swelling and stiffness. MSM helps repair the rigid fibrous tissue cells in our muscles that become broken down during exercise, therefore helping prevent them from swelling for prolong periods of time.
2.      MSM is highly effective in improving joint flexibility. Research suggests that MSM can act like a natural analgesic, help prevent and treat muscles ache and pains, throbbing and swelling while improving range of motion and mobility.  It’s been shown to help muscle recovery after exercise, injuries and even surgeries.
3.      MSM helps to improve skin health and restore hair growth. MSM has been shown to help boost both collagen and keratin levels, two nutrients we absolutely need to form new hair strands and also rebuild strong nails and skin cells. Sagging skin and wrinkles, as well as dry, cracked skin are all developed through a loss of collagen. MSM works together with Vitamin C to build new, healthy tissues. It’s also highly noted to contribute to exceptional strength and thickness of the hair and nails, which can be noticed in just a couple weeks of consistent use.
4.      It naturally increases energy. Due to the increased permeability of the cells, less energy is required to deal with the accumulation of toxins. Digestion is the biggest energy requirement of the body (Approximately 70-80% of your energy is spent on digestion each day). MSM increases the absorption of nutrients so that the energy expenditure on digestion is vastly reduced.
5.      It helps body adapts to stress. Taking MSM before exercising, such as running, seems to reduce muscle damage and other markers of stress. It can also reduce fatigue felt after stressful events and support an upbeat mood, energy levels and normal digestion.
6.      It helps detoxify the body. One of the most important features of MSM is that it makes your cells more permeable. i.e. it allows toxins and metabolic waste products to easily be moved out of the cells, while essential nutrients and hydration can be moved in.

Also importantly, MSM’s sulfur plays an important role in the production of glutathione, considered to be a “master antioxidant” and an important agent for detoxification.
How much MSM do you need? The FDA doesn’t recognize a recommended dietary allowance for an MSM supplement because there’s no proven symptoms of sulfur deficiency described in medical literature as of now. Therefore, the dosage you’ll want to take depends on what you’re using MSM for and your current state of health. MSM supplement is available in powder form, cream form and capsule/tablet form.

GET RID OF THAT AGE SPOTS!

Age spots are also known as liver spots, sun spots or senile lentigo. They are flat, brown or dark spots on the skin and usually occur on sun-exposed areas of the skin. They have the same texture as the rest of your skin and are painless. It happens as a result of build-up wastes known as lipofuscin accumulation, a by-product of free radical damage in skin cells. Exposure to the sun causes the development of free radicals that damage the skin. People of any age and sex can develop age spots irrespective of the race. However, they are more common in people who have fair skin, history of frequent sun exposure and being older than 40 years old.
Treatment isn’t necessary because they don’t cause any health problems. However, people want to remove it because they don’t like the way they look. There are several medical procedures that can treat age spots but each carries a risk of side effects and complications. They include, laser treatment to destroy the cells that produce melanin, cryosurgery (freezes age spots with liquid nitrogen) and chemical peels to burn the outer layer of your skin allowing new skin to grow in its place. If you want to use over the counter cream, choose one that contain glycolic acid, kojic acid, deoxyarbutin, alpha hydroxyl acid. Cosmetics don’t remove age spots but rather cover them up.
Nutrients like Antioxidants (e.g. vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, zinc etc.) to protect against free radical damage, Lactobacillus (aids in liver regeneration and digestion), Tretinoin (retin A) which speeds up sloughing off of top layers of skin and also removes fine wrinkles can be used for age spots.
Herbs like burdock, milk thistle and red clover aid in cleansing the blood stream. Ginseng and liquorice are also beneficial but is not used to be used for hypertensive patients.
Lemon juice, Apple cider vinegar, Onions, Castor oil, Aloe Vera juice, Olive oil, Papaya, Orange juice, Buttermilk and tomato, Watermelon, Cumin seed, Yogurt mask, Cucumber juice, Garlic, Dandelion and Rose water can all be used as home remedies for age spots as most are powerful source of antioxidants.
You can’t always prevent age spots but you can reduce your chances of getting them by avoiding the sun between 10a.m and 3p.m when the sun rays are most intense, wear a sunscreen every day, apply sunscreen at least 30minutes before sun exposure and wear protective clothing such as hats, long-sleeved shirt, eat a diet high in protein, veggies and fruits, avoid caffeine, tobacco, fat foods and processed foods, cleanse the liver and get rid of toxins from the body etc.
Note: On rare occasions, age spots can make skin cancer more difficult to diagnose. The appearance of age spots can cause emotional distress in some people.

HEALTHY NUTS (1): ALMONDS
Almond nut is the seed of almond fruit. Almonds are off-white in color, covered by a thin brownish skin and encased in a hard shell. They are classified into 2 categories: sweet almonds and bitter almonds. Sweet almonds are edible, usually malleable in texture and wonderfully buttery in taste. Bitter almonds are used to make almond oil; they are inedible as they naturally contain toxic substances such as hydrocyanic acid which are removed in the manufacturing of almond oil.
Almond is often eaten on its own raw or toasted, available in many forms such as whole, flaked or flour. It can also be made into almond milk (can be taken by people with lactulose intolerance as it is not a diary milk), almond oil (used in cosmetics and also for cooking) and almond butter (can be spread on bread instead of margarine)
According to the US Food and Drug Administration reference values for nutrition labelling; in 23g of raw almonds: there is 14.72mcg Biotin, 6.03mg Vitamin E, 0.53g Manganese, 0.23mg Copper and Vitamin B2, 111.32mg Potassium, 61.64mg Magnesium, 2.81g Fiber, 4.88g Protein, 4.98g Carbohydrate, 11.37g Total fat, 0.86mg Iron, 0.71mg Zinc, 162.15mg Potassium, 132.25g Calories and 0.89g Total sugars.
Health benefits of almonds are extensive.
1.      It lowers LDL cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease- it promote cardiovascular health by providing 162mg of potassium (which is essential for maintaining normal blood pressure and heart function. Almonds are high in monounsaturated fats (health-promoting fats which have been associated with reduced risk of heart disease). It ability to reduce heart disease risk may also be due to the antioxidant action of vitamin E found in it.
2.      It provides protection against diabetes- almonds appear to not only decrease after meal rises in blood sugar, but also provide antioxidants to mop up the smaller amounts of free radicals.
3.      It aids brain development- almonds are source of many nutrients which helps in the development and health of human brain. They contain 2 vital brain nutrient: vitamin B2 and L-carnitine which have been shown to increase brain activity, resulting in new neural pathway.
4.      It helps to strengthen immune system- it contains zinc and vitamin E which is a powerful antioxidant.
5.      It strengthens the bone- it contain phosphorus which as a considerable impact on the strength and durability of bones and teeth.
6.      It boosts energy- the presence of manganese, copper and vitamin B2 helps in energy production and metabolic rate.
7.      It is good for pregnancy- it contain folic acid which helps to reduce the incidence of birth defects in newborn. It also stimulates healthy cell growth and tissue formation.
8.      For weight loss- the dietary fiber in almonds contributes to the sensation of being full. Also, the monounsaturated fat contained in almonds satisfies appetite and prevents over eating.
9.      Almonds are high in antioxidants that can protect your cells from oxidative damage, a major contributor to ageing and disease.
10.  In cosmetics, almond oil is used for smooth and flawless skin, relive eczema, psoriasis and skin rashes, to remove dark tan and signs of ageing, for muscle ache and fatigue, to control hair loss and for long shiny hair.
Go nut!!! Take almond!!!

FIGHT THAT BELLY FAT WITH BEANS

Beans are nutritional powerhouses packed with protein, fiber (both soluble and insoluble fiber), B vitamins, potassium, iron, magnesium but low in fat. They are also packed with chemicals called phenols that protects cells throughout the body from oxidative damage, which helps explain the beans reputation for lowering risk for cancer and heart diseases. The darker the beans, the higher its level of antioxidants.
One of the best foods you can eat to beat fat is beans. Becoming a bean lover can help you lose weight. Beans are loaded with soluble fiber, which promotes good bacteria in the gut, thus lowering inflammation linked to belly fat. Beans helps you feel full more quickly because of its rich fiber contents which fills your stomach and makes you feel full longer because the fiber in them keeps starchy foods low on the glycemic index i.e. they release glucose more slowly into the bloodstream.
High protein foods like beans enhance fat loss while preserving your lean muscle mass. It releases a hormone that encourages fat to be used as energy.
Expert recommends you consume up to 4 cups of beans a week because they are so good for your health. Previous studies have found that consuming just 2-4 cups of beans per week can produce positive health effects.
People who eat beans on a consistent basis experience less gas and bloating than people who consume them less often. Just be sure to drink lots of water, you will need it to help all that fiber move through your gastrointestinal tract.
Beans aren’t as bad for gas as you think. Look to beans to help you reach your goal.

HONEY AND CHOLESTEROL

Can honey really lower cholesterol? Find out and know how.
What is cholesterol? Cholesterol is a type of fat or lipid produced by the liver needed to make vitamin D and some hormones, build cell walls and create bile salts that help you digest fat. Our liver produces enough of cholesterol, so we don’t have to worry if there is need to get supplements.
Many foods contain cholesterol and sometimes we might find it difficult to ensure that we don’t get excessive intake of cholesterol that could lead to serious health problems. Whole-fat dairy products (such as ice cream, milk and cheese), eggs and meat are loaded with cholesterol. For cholesterol to find its way into the different part of the body, it has to combine with protein (to form lipoprotein) because it can’t travel alone through the bloodstream.
Most cholesterol is bad (the bad cholesterol is the low density lipoprotein), it can narrow the arteries and clog the blood vessels that supply the vital organs such as the brain, kidneys, heart and intestines. So, pay attention to your cholesterol levels by avoiding foods that are high in saturated and trans fat, keeping an exercise regime to strengthen your heart, maintaining healthy weight and consuming diet low in fat e.g. fruits, vegetables, fish, cereals and legumes (beans).
How does honey lower cholesterol? Honey is free of cholesterol and is a healthy, non-drug option to help reduce cholesterol level. First, it has several nutrients such as potassium, sodium, calcium and B-complex vitamins that always fight cholesterol within the body. Secondly, the antioxidants in honey prevent cholesterol from being moved out of the blood into the lining of the blood vessels. Daily consumption of honey could raise blood levels of protective antioxidants compounds in the body. Dark honey lowers cholesterol more effectively than lighter honey because it contains higher level of antioxidants. Also, honey suppresses the level of food storage within the body, which can help to reduce weight gain.
If you are thinking about enhancing your heath by reducing the levels of cholesterol in your body, then, always take honey. You can mix honey and lemon juice with a cup of warm water and drink each morning before breakfast. If you can incorporate honey in places where you might be using table sugar, in no time, you may find a significant increase in the amount of antioxidant chemical compounds in your body and it will also save you money that most people spend on health supplements.

ECTOGENESIS: COMING EPOCH OF MOTHERLESS BIRTH.

You would tend to ask, how possible is it for a child to survive outside the womb? This sounds insanely unbelievable and yet achievable. YES! It is called Ectogenesis. It means growth of an organism outside of a body and it applies to animal as well as the growth of bacteria. Recently scientists sustained human embryo in a petri dish for 13 days, shattering the previous record of 9days.
Ectogenesis would require an artificial uterus that supplies nutrients and oxygen to the foetus, custom-built amniotic fluid sac would also need to remove waste, this would be attached to ‘placenta machine’ and cables could monitor everything from the baby’s weight to heart rate and development.
Research into ectogenesis technology has the potential to cause a dramatic shift in cultural assumptions regarding women’s role in reproduction. The advent of ectogenesis would mean females would no longer have to solely bear the responsibility of child birth.
Advantages of ectogenesis
1. It could be used for women who are unable to carry babies naturally due to a damaged uterus while simultaneously avoiding the need to engage a surrogate.
2. It would reduce the number of pregnancy and birth-related deaths among women.
3. It could extend the age at which women give birth and drugs could be more easily administer to the foetus if it became ill.
4. It may be safer than ‘normal womb’ i.e. the risk of accidents, drugs, diseases, alcohol, inadequate nutrition etc. would all be virtually eliminated.
5. It would provide for the needs of women whose lifestyles would not easily accommodate pregnancy.
6. It would also provide a method of terminating an unwanted pregnancy that didn’t also bring about the death of the foetus.
7. It could reduce the number of still births, because fetuses would be more closely monitored and accessible.
Disadvantages of ectogenesis
1. The risks of removing foetus from the womb.
2. Men taking over unique function of women.
3. It would determine women’s right to decide when/how to become mothers.
4. It would reduce women’s status to laborers, sex providers and breeders.
5. May be used for no reason at all, as women are no longer forced to endure pregnancy.
6. Men gaining complete control over reproduction and women’s bodies.
7. Children who develop in an artificial uterus may lack some essential bond with their mothers that other children have.
Natural birth is filled with perils and ectogenesis could potentially offer a safe alternative but do you think it would be acceptable in our society? Would people tend to be comfortable using it? Don’t you think it will redefine social role?

International Youth Day 2016 - “The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production”

International Youth Day (IYD) is an awareness day designated by the United Nations to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. It is observed annually on 12 August. It is meant as an opportunity for governments and others to draw attention to youth issues worldwide. During IYD, concerts, workshops, cultural events, and meetings involving national and local government officials and youth organizations take place around the world.
The theme of the 2016 International Youth Day is “The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production”. It focuses on the leading role of young people in ensuring poverty eradication and achieving sustainable development through sustainable consumption and production.
Children are the future of the world and to have a successful future we must invest in them, giving them the opportunities and the education they need and deserve. The youth makes up 43% of the world’s population i.e. There is large potential force out there that can change the world. Youth are powerful agents of positive change, essential to taking forward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Sustainable consumption entails the use of products and services that meet the basic needs of communities while safeguarding the needs of future generations. The development and promotion of individual choices and actions that increase the eco-efficiency of consumption of all and minimize waste and pollution is critical to achieving equitable socioeconomic development.
The Sustainable Development Goals are: End poverty in all its forms everywhere, end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture, ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages, ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss, conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources, promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all, achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation, revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development. Etc.
Youth Perspective in poverty eradication is built on the understanding that young people are not merely a target group but also initiators, participants, decision-makers and leaders. Eliminating
poverty requires that young people must be recognized as a resource for change in society. This is where young people have a critical role to play. If countries are to succeed in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, leaving no one behind along the way, governments must seek out an active and substantive engagement of young men and women from diverse backgrounds in national-level planning, implementation, and monitoring. The overall success of the SDGs depends on youth engagement because young people are:
1. Critical thinkers: Youth have the capacity to identify and challenge existing power structures and barriers to change, and to expose contradictions and biases.
2. Communicators: Young people can be partners in communicating the agenda to their peers and communities at the local level, as well as across countries and regions.
3. Innovators: Young people often have direct knowledge of and insights into issues that are not accessible to adults. Youth best understand the problems they face and can offer new ideas and alternative solutions.
4. Change-makers: Young people also have the power to act and mobilize others. Youth activism is on the rise now, strengthened by broader connectivity and access to social media.
5. Leaders: When young people are empowered with the knowledge of their rights and supported to develop leadership skills, they can drive change in their communities and countries.
Millions of people are already transforming the way we produce, consume, behave and communicate. It is not enough to hope for a better tomorrow -- we must act now.

PRICED ABOVE RUBIES

The book of proverbs is based on metaphor and proverbs 31 provides a detailed metaphor of feminine wisdom in the context of a family and a community. The most quoted section, verses 10-31 is a chiastic poem. It speaks of the worth of a woman that is priced above rubies i.e. the worth of a good wife to her husband, her ability to provide for a family, the manual labor she does and her wisdom in caring for herself so she can share her strength with others.
Why is that woman priced above rubies, of all the gemstone? Rubies are distinguished for their bright color, being the most famed and fabled, a stone of nobility, most magnificent of all gems, the queen of stones and stones of kings. It values even exceeds that of the diamond.
A woman priced above rubies is a virtuous woman, a valiant and worthy woman, a woman of noble character and an excellent spirit, a capable and diligent woman.
A diligent woman- she isn’t afraid of work. She gets up in the morning and gets things done. She can take pain in her duties and pleasure in them as well. Taking care of our responsibilities is characteristic of wisdom. Do not falter on your responsibilities, finish it in a timely manner without procrastinating.
An excellent woman- she is intelligent and well-informed. she is educated about the world and the world of business. She knows how to use her skills to provide for her family. She is wise to the ways of the world, but lives by the wisdom of God. Be prudent in spending money and use your earth’s resources wisely.
A woman of noble character- she has the grace to help others. she ensures that those under her care receive what they need (food, clothing, protection etc.). she is intent upon giving freely and cheerfully. While you should not ignore your own needs, you should think highly of the needs of others and be there to take care of those needs when you can.
A valiant and worthy woman- she is brave and courageous. She partners with her husband to get things done, looks out for his interest and give him the security that is lacking in this world. She is worth more than a substantial paycheck.
A virtuous woman- she makes sure her appearance reflects her respected position as an influence in her community. Let your outward beauty reflect your inner beauty. For beauty to be complete, outward beauty must harmonize with inward beauty to be whole. A virtuous woman always fears God.
How any individual woman exemplifies these characteristics will depend on her situation, gifts and abilities. Be a daughter polished after the similitude of a palace. Be:
P-Principled
R-Right-minded
I-Inculpable
C-Chaste
E-Excellent
D-Decorous

A-Angelic
B-Blameless
O-Open
V-Virginal
E-Ethical

R-Respectable
U-Untainted
B-Beneficial
Y-Youthful

WORLD HEPATITIS DAY 2016: KNOW HEPATITIS. ACT NOW.

World Hepatitis Day is an opportunity to step up national and international efforts on hepatitis. World hepatitis day is celebrated July 28th of every year. key approaches will be to expand vaccination program for hepatitis B, focus on preventing mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B, improve injection, blood and surgical safety and increase access to diagnosis and treatment for hepatitis B and C.
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. It is most commonly caused by a viral infection. There are 5 main hepatitis virus referred to as type A, B, C, D and E. Other infections, alcohol and autoimmune disease can also cause hepatitis. Hepatitis can be self-limiting or can progress to fibrosis, cirrhosis or liver cancer.
Type A and type E are typically caused by ingestion of contaminated food and water. Type B, type C and type D usually occur as a result of parenteral contact with infected body fluids. Hepatitis B and C are the deadliest of all the viral hepatitis. Common modes of transmission for these viruses includes receipt of contaminated blood/blood product, invasive medical procedures using contaminated equipment, transmission from mother to baby at birth, family members to child and also by sexual contact.
Symptoms includes fatigue, dark urine, pale stool, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, flu-like symptoms, fever, yellow skin and eyes.
Hepatitis can be diagnosed through physical examination, liver biopsy, liver function tests, ultrasound, blood test and viral antibody testing.
Treatment option varies on the type of hepatitis you have and what caused the infection. Hepatitis A is not usually treated but vaccination can help prevent the infection. Type B doesn’t require specific treatment but chronic hepatitis B is treated with antiviral medications. Hepatitis B vaccines is also available and is recommended for all newborns, healthcare workers and medical personnel. Antiviral medications are used to treat hepatitis C. Type D is treated with               x-interferon and type E has no specific medical therapy currently.
Nutrients and herbs useful in treating hepatitis includes; Milk thistle (helps to rebuild the liver), raw liver extract, glutathione, l-cysteine and l-methionine, lecithin shark liver oil, evening primrose oil, maitake, vitamin C and E, burdock and dandelion (for liver cleansing), licorice (has antiviral activity), goldenseal, green tea, red clover and yellow dock are also useful.
Then, avoid taking drugs metabolized by the liver (Glucocorticoids are not recommended), take high calorie diet, eat raw vegetables and fruits diet, take green drinks and carrot juice and avoid all fats, sugar and highly processed food.
Know hepatitis, get informed, are you at risk? Yes, anyone and everyone can be at risk.
Know hepatitis, take positive action to know your status by getting tested- the test can be complex and costly, about 95% of people with hepatitis are unaware of their infection.
Know hepatitis, demand treatment, you can be completely cured of hepatitis C within 3-6 months if you are infected.
Know hepatitis, get vaccinated to prevent hepatitis. Vaccinations are available for hepatitis A and B to reduce needless deaths from these preventable infections.
KNOW HEPATITIS! ACT NOW!!

Life rules for every classy black lady

1. Educate yourself- a truly classy black lady should be versatile, knowledgeable on a variety of subjects and be aware of recent news. Read books that will teach you something new regularly, read articles written by experts and visit informational websites. Don’t just watch reality show; mix it with some educative program.
2. Care about your appearance- how you present yourself to the universe does have an effect on how you feel about yourself. Dress the way you want to be address. Hold your head high and prance!
3. Avoid being loud and noisy in public- a classy black lady does not get loud and violent in public. If you are having a disagreement with a friend while out in public, pull the person aside to a private place before settling your differences.
4. Experience and respect different cultures- do not hesitate to expand your mind by experiencing and showing respect to other cultures. Travel and visit new places. Make friends with people from different cultures. Try new foods and activities that you wouldn’t normally partake in. cultural awareness is an important step to becoming a complete and well grounded lady.
5. Get your house in order- you can’t call yourself a classy lady when your home is a mess. Your home is your castle. Make sure you keep it clean, tidy and well organized. This also applies to your personal house (your body), treat it like a temple- eat healthy foods, exercise and stay fit. Take care of your teeth, hair, skin and nails. Take care of your body; it’s the only place you have to live.
6. Save for your future- know the importance of saving towards your future. Forget about those bogus reports about the net wealth of black women, know your own situation and know what you have to do to save for your future.
7. Don’t let money control you- control the money. Love of money is the root of all evil. Buying expensive material items won’t make you a fulfilled lady. If you choose to spend money do it in a way that keeps you in complete control of your finances.
8. Love and appreciate your fellow sisters- take a serious look at your mother, sisters, friends, aunties, cousins and other people in your life, look at how they sacrifice for you and how they care for you. Appreciate other women for their strength, beauty and elegance. Learn from the women around you.
Continue to strive for excellence in your own life!
If there is any important rule you think I miss, you can let me know in the comment area below.

Amino acids and natural hair growth

“You are what you eat” especially when it comes to being physically healthy.
Amino acids, which are essential organic compounds, are the building blocks of proteins. Proteins provide the structure for all living things. Every living organism from the largest animal to the tiniest microbe is composed of protein. It makes up the greatest portion of our body weight, next to water. It makes up the hair, nails, muscles, tendons, glands, ligaments and many vital body fluids. Each protein in the body is tailored for a specific need; they are not interchangeable.
Proteins that make up human body are not obtained directly from the diet. The liver produces about 80% of amino acids and 20% are obtained from diet. The ones obtained from the diet are the essential amino acids while the ones manufactured by the body are non-essential.
Sulphur containing amino acids like cysteine and methionine create the connective tissues found in hair, skin and nails and are of paramount importance when it comes to increasing the speed of hair growth. They are essential amino acids and we need to consume them by eating the right food because our body doesn’t synthesize them. Best food source of methionine and cysteine includes Eggs, Fish, Chicken, Brazil nuts, Sunflower seeds, Cheese, Oat, Peanut, Almond, Corn, Wheat germ, Beans etc. Brazil nuts contain larger amounts of sulphur and should be consumed in a balanced fashion, don’t overdo. Onions and garlic are also rich in sulphur. You can squeeze out it juice and apply on your scalp carefully, leave it for 15minutes and finally rinse off with mild shampoo. The key is to ingest them daily so that your body gets used to having a steady supply of these amino acids.
Having a consist level of methionine and cysteine in your body is what we increase the rate of hair and nail growth and skin rejuvenation. Loss of methionine has been linked to graying of hair; it leads to buildup of hydrogen peroxide in hair follicles and a gradual loss of hair color.
When you make a lifestyle change to include amino acids in your diet, expect your hair to gradually grow faster, it won’t be overnight. In a month, you should definitely see the difference, especially if you are eating one of these foods daily. Keep it up and the result might really surprise you.

World Hypertension Day: know your number

World Hypertension Day is a day designated and initiated by The World Hypertension League (WHL). The day was initiated to increase the awareness of hypertension which is very important because of the lack of knowledge among hypertensive patients. Since 2006, the WHL has been dedicating May 17 of every year as World Hypertension Day. This year’s theme is ‘know your number’.
Everybody has blood pressure but not all has hypertension. Blood pressure depends on several factors: the output from the heart, the resistance to blood flow of the blood vessels, blood volume and blood distribution to the various organs. Pressure is abnormally high in people who suffer from hypertension.
What then is hypertension?
Hypertension also known as the silent killer is a medical condition that often remains undiagnosed until relatively late in the course. It can be explained as blood pressure exceeding 140/90mmHg. Sphygmomanometer is used to diagnose blood pressure. Blood pressure is expressed  by two measurements, the systolic pressure which is the pressure exerted by the blood when heart beats, forcing blood into the blood vessels  when the blood pressure is at its highest and the diastolic pressure, which is recorded when the heart is at rest in between peaks, when the blood pressure is at the lowest.
The condition is often associated with coronary heart disease, diabetes, kidney disorders, obesity, hyperthyroidism, arteriosclerosis and adrenal tumors. Men tend to develop hypertension more often than women, but the risk of women rises after menopause and soon approaches that of men. Women’s risk of high blood pressure also increases if she is pregnant or takes oral contraceptives.
Symptoms of hypertension include headache, blurred vision, sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, rapid pulse, fatigue and sleeplessness, nausea.
Lifestyle changes and medication can lower blood pressure and decrease the risk of health complications.  Lifestyle changes include:
1. Weight reduction- maintain normal body weight (BMI 18.5-24.9kg/m2).
2. Adopt DASH eating plan- consume a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low fat dietary products. (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension).
3. Physical activity- engage in regular aerobic physical activity such as brisk walking and jogging.
4. Dietary sodium reduction- reduce dietary sodium intake to no more than 100mmol/day (2.4g sodium or 6g sodium chloride).
5. Moderation of alcohol consumption- limit consumption to no more than 2 drinks per day or stop the intake of alcohol.
If lifestyle changes are not sufficient, blood pressure medications are used. Several classes of medications, collectively known as antihypertensive medication are available for treating hypertension. Nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, garlic, selenium, essential fatty acids (flaxseed oil, primrose oil, and blackcurrant seed oil), coenzymes Q10, vitamin C and vitamin E can help to improve heart function and lower blood pressure. Herbs like capsicum, chamomile, fennel hawthorn berries, rosemary, hops and valerian are also useful in calming the nerves. Ephedra and licorice can elevate blood pressure, avoid them.
Recommendations
1. Follow a strict salt-free diet.
2. Keep your weight down.
3. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.
4. Detoxify your body.
5. Get sufficient sleep.
6. Eat a high fiber diet and take supplemental diet.
7. Avoid stress as much as possible.
8. Drink steam-distilled water only.
9. Avoid all animal fats.
10. Have your blood pressure checked regularly.
Today is World Hypertension Day; know your number by visiting the nearest pharmacy store close to you. It is free!

Milk of Magnesia: Beyond a Laxative

Milk of magnesia is the trade name for the drug ‘Magnesium hydroxide’. It is used to improve digestive problems and fight stomach acid but it is also worth knowing that it can be applied externally too. So what does a proven laxative have to do with blemished skin? Well, it calms and relaxes the skin much as it calms and relaxes troubled intestines. It is a product that is appreciated in beauty due to its properties, which are great for improving skin appearance and treating certain skin conditions. Come on! Let’s see what other things milk of magnesia do aside being a laxative.
1. It is greatly used to fight greasy skin and its oily appearance by regulating excess sebum. It absorbs oil and shrinks pores. Hence, it is used as a face primer. Apply 2 drops of milk of magnesia onto a cotton pad and wipe it over your face. Always do it on clean skin.
2. It is an effective solution for treating skin with dermatitis because in mild cases it can minimize some of the main symptoms such as redness, itching and irritation. Apply twice a day for relief.
3. It is also effective for treating acne skin because it prevents outbreaks of pimples and pores becoming so easily clogged with external pollution. It also promotes skin cleansing by removing all the dirt and accumulated oil. Dabbing some milk of magnesia directly on an active pimple, leaving it overnight will dry out the zit before it can grow larger.
4. It helps to soothe the burning sensation in the dermis when it is burned due to excessive sun exposure.
5. To alleviate some conditions such as cold sores affecting your lips and also act as natural deodorant, combating excessive sweating and body odor.
6. It has alkaline nature that naturally draws oil away from the surface of the skin. It also has antibacterial qualities that help to kill bacterial on the skin.
But note that it is not suitable for very dry skin as it make it tight and make it even drier. It is essential to apply in small quantities. Do a small test on your hand before using it to check for possible allergic reactions. There are some treatments that are not exactly meant for acne but work well. Milk of magnesia is one such acne cure.

Unfading beauty

There is a beauty that God is looking for in us. It attracts God to anyone that has it. It is the inner beauty of the hidden person of the heart, the ageless beauty of a meek, gentle and quiet spirit. It is the beauty from within, it is incorruptible, not subjected to decay, and it endures forever. This is the unfading beauty. Unfading beauty is of a great price and it is precious in Gods sight.
Somehow, women are generally concerned about their outward look. The desire to look attractive drives many into paying attention to their hairdo, kind of clothes and shoes to put on and jewels to put on. Covetousness has become a stronghold in many lives as they desire to dress as queens. Whereas the wearing of nice dresses, braiding the hair neatly and wearing of gold are not out rightly forbidden by God but a Christian beauty must not be made to depend on these.
Physical beauty can attract the natural man but not God. Beauty in the sight of God is that of the inner man which are the ornaments of meek, gentle and quiet spirit. These are precious much more than gold or silver in God’s sight.
To be meek means to be lowly, gentle and submissive. A gentle woman is humble, submissive and doesn’t struggle for anything even if she is right. She leaves all things in the hands of God, trusting God to defend her. Anyone who manifests a gentle spirit attracts God’s presence and attention. Press on for this inner jewel if you want to make yourself beautiful.
Quietness is another ornament of inner beauty God wants us to cultivate. To be quiet means to be peaceful and unperturbed no matter the situation. It is deeper than being silent. Silence is external and quietness is internal, though it may manifest externally by silence. A quiet woman is a woman that is healthy within and without. She is calm and free from all fears even if she is passing through some difficulties. She is free from moral conflicts. She may not look so beautiful in appearance but beautiful within because of what she possess within. Make it a lifestyle not to worry about anything but pray about everything.
Another ornament of inner beauty is holy life. Holiness is an external manifestation of an inner purity and loyalty to God. It is not ordinarily external. It has its root in the heart. Holy character and service will be produced by a life that is loyal to God. It is not a matter of holy dressing or speaking holy, it is being holy at heart. There is beauty in holiness. It is a life that makes the holy God to make himself manifest. Spend your time and resources to cultivate this.
Friend, have you discovered this unfading jewel yet? Or are you still busy running after the jewel of gold and silver? Gold and silver are good. They are God’s handiwork but they are perishables and are of no eternal value as far as attracting God is concerned. If you must invest your time, energy and resources, invest it first on the inner man, beautify the inner man which is of great price in God’s sight.
“Favor is deceitful. Beauty is vain, but a woman that feareth God shall be praised”.
