Royal Jelly: Beauty and the Foodie

Royal jelly is the main food source for bee larva in the first 3 days of their development. Royal jelly is rich in amino acids (about 29), lipids, sugars, proteins, 10-hydroxydecenoic acid (10-HDA) which is the major therapeutic component, vitamins (vitamin A, B COMPLEX, C,D and E) and minerals (ample level of calcium and iron). It also contains acetylcholine, which is needed to transmit nerves messages from cell to cell.
Royal jelly, often referred to as bees milk, cannot be duplicated in any laboratory due to its complex chemical structure. It is an expensive item on the shelf and it seems to have become increasingly more and more popular as a beauty bee product.
It is majorly used in dietary supplement but also as addition to body lotions and creams. Royal jelly is believed to be able to nourish the body on the inside and revitalizes it on the outside as well. it benefits are extensively associated with healthier skin and hair and more youthful appearance.
What does royal jelly do to your skin?
1. Skin aging process - with increasing age, the skin's cell renewal process becomes less efficient. Cell regeneration and tissue repair slows down, the amount of natural moisture present in the skin is reduced. As collagen production lessen, skin becomes thinner and looses its flexibility. Boosting collagen production slows down the aging process. Royal jelly contain mineral like silicon that leads to increased collagen production. Amino acids are also a component of collagen that makes the skin firm. Specific antioxidants its contains like flavonoids, nucleic acids and hormones also support skin renewal.
2. Moisturizes the skin - Royal jelly's fats, suspended as a natural emulsion, have moisturizing properties, protect skin from dehydration and reduce inflammation. Royal jelly increases the moisture cotent of the skin which inturn helps to treat dry and damaged skin.
3. Promote new skin growth - It is known to regenerate the cells and tissues. The skin can renew itself in 30days if you use royal jelly for the skin.
4. Hormonal balance and the skin - Royal jelly is a powerful hormonal tonic because the hormones are so complex, they are used for hormonal balancing when there is hormonal imbalance in the body especially, during a period such as menopause, a decrease in hormone often causes skin problems like drier skin with increased wrinkles, skin looses some elasticity as collagen production is reduced. Older skin appears paler as the lack of estrogen reduces the number of blood vessels in the skin. Taking royal jelly as a dietary supplement helps hormonal imbalance.
Royal jelly B vitamins offers benefits asides the anti aging properties, vitamin B3 in particular helps prevent scaliness, irritation, redness and inconsistent pigmentation while Biotin encourages healthy fatty acid metabolism, which in turn encourages healthier skin.
The only issue with Royal jelly seems to be that it triggers allergic reaction in some people. Note that if you are allergic to honey, it is highly probable that the same is true for royal jelly.

PROBIOTICS AND YOUR HEALTH

Probiotics are live bacteria or yeast that line the digestive tract and support the ability to absorb nutrients and fight infections. The body is full of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are often referred to as the good bacteria. How do they work? They help to replace the good bacteria you might have lost after taking an antibiotics and also help balance your “good” and “bad” bacteria to keep your body working like it should.
Probiotics benefits begin in the gut. There are actually 10 times more probiotics in the gut than cells in the body. Digestive tracts are critical to health because 80% of the entire immune system is located in the digestive tract. The secret to restoring the digestive health is all about balancing out the good and bad bacteria in the gut. So, if you are going to be healthy, you must consider consuming probiotics rich foods or supplements daily.
Historically, we had plenty of probiotics in our diets from eating fresh foods from good soil and by fermenting our food to keep them from spoiling. However, because of refrigeration and bad agricultural practices, our foods contain little or no probiotics today. Probiotics killers includes: prescription antibiotics, sugar, grains, emotional stress, chemicals, tap water etc.

There are several kinds of probiotics, and their health benefits are determined by the job they do in the gut. They include:
1.       Lactobacillus - there are more than 50 species of lactobacilli. They are naturally found in the genital, digestive and urinary system. Food that are fermented like yoghurt contain these bacteria. Some of the lactobacilli found in foods and supplements are Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. gasseri, L. planetarium etc.

2.       Bifidobacteria - there are approximately 30 species of these bacteria. They make up most of the healthy bacteria in the colon and appear in intestinal tract within days of birth especially in breastfed infants. Some of these bacteria are Bifidobacterium bifidum, B. longum, B. infantis etc.

3.       Saccharomyces boulardii - it is the only yeast probiotic.

4.       Streptococcus thermophiles - this produces large quantities of the enzyme, lactase, making it effective in the prevention of lactase intolerance.

Benefits of probiotics
1.       Improves digestion.

2.       Reduces cold and flu.

3.       Fights Helicobacter pylori in ulcer patients.

4.       Gives better breath as it helps to destroy candida.

5.       Increases energy from the production vitamin B12.

6.       Enhances immune function.

7.       Heals leaky gut syndrome.

8.       Battles cancer.

9.       Helps in weight loss management.

10.   Makes skin healthier as it treats eczema and psoriasis.

11.   They also treat common conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), infectious and antibiotic-related diarrhea, urinary and vaginal health diseases etc.
How do you get more probiotics in your system?

1.       Consume more probiotic-rich foods e.g. yoghurt, goat milk, cheese, ginger, onions, garlic etc.

2.       Eat more sour foods e.g. Apple Cider Vinegar. They contain certain type of acids like acetic acids, healthy acids that create a certain type of PH in the body that support the growth of probiotic in the system. One tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar can be added to drink twice daily.

3.       Feed the probiotics in your system- probiotics need fuel to live in your body as they are living organisms. They need good soil like fermentable fiber to survive. Consuming high quality fiber in your diet can cause probiotics increase in your body i.e. soluble fiber e.g. chia seeds, flaxseeds, sweet potatoes, organic fruits and vegetables.

4.       Take a quality probiotic supplement.
Take care of your gut, and the friendly bacteria that resides there. Maintaining a healthy gut goes way beyond just taking a probiotic supplement. What you do from day to day is just as important since all sorts of lifestyle factors have shown to affect your gut bacteria.

See reasons why you need neem oil for your skin and hair

Neem oil is a type of vegetable oil extracted from the fruits of neem tree. It comprises of two major compounds(phytochemicals) named Azadirachtin and triterpenoid which gives neem oil its therapeutics and medicinal value (Antipyretic, antihistamine, antifungal and antiseptics properties). Neem oil takes different colors like yellow-brown, golden yellow and dark brown based on the method of extraction. Neem oil has a strong and pungent aroma and is extremely bitter in taste because of the presence of phytochemicals. Neem oil is loaded with fatty acids and alkaloids.

There are innumerable benefits of neem oil for health and wellness and there is a reason many beauty cosmetics boast of neem based products, it is loaded with medicinal properties associated with skin care.

1.      Collagen stimulation and anti-aging serum- Neem stimulates collagen production which slows down the aging process of the skin. Regular usage not just smoothens wrinkles and fine lines but also make skin look young and supple. The fatty acids and vitamin E found in neem oil are easily absorbed into the skin without leaving the skin greasy. Once absorbed, it works to rejuvenate the skin’s cells and restore elasticity. It also contains carotenoids that accelerate skin’s defense against free radicals which cause aging. The vitamin E also acts as a free radical scavenger, by hindering the oxidizing process.

Its EFAs and vitamin E properties helps it penetrates deep within the skin to heal the miniscule cracks brought on by severe dryness. Neem oil has been proven to be a natural remedy for eczema symptoms (dry, red, itchy skin) and be very soothing, but it will not cure the root causes for eczema. The aspirin like compound in neem oil removes acne causing bacteria from the skin. The vitamin E in neem oil helps to prevent moisture loss.

3.      Tones the skin and removes blackhead- The high fatty-acid content in neem is said to prevent and treat blackheads and is non-comedogenic. Neem oil helps to restore the moisture of the skin and fights pathogens that are found below the skin surface. Using neem oil as a skin toner leaves the skin young and smooth. The leaves are excellent exfoliant used in a facial mask to pull out impurities and tighten pores.

4.      Reduces hyperpigmentation- Neem oil slows down the production of melanin, the skin coloring agent, which when secreted in higher amounts leads to pigmentation. Applying neem oil beautify and rejuvenate the skin thereby reducing skin pigmentation drastically.

5.      Conditions the skin- Neem oil deep moisturizes, conditions and repairs skin dryness.

3.      Improves hair texture and promotes healthy scalp- The beauty of the hair depends on the health of the scalp. Regular application of neem oil will result in healthy scalp and hair. It leaves your hair untangled and strong, thereby taming them to the desired style. Neem oil is also considered as soothing, cooling and astringent in nature which not only reduces the chances of hair shedding starting from the root but also regulate the secretion of the scalp’s natural oil.
